On April 10th we moved into our “Summer Palace” and began our 6 month stint as “Camp Hosts” at West Lake Park in Davenport, Iowa. This is our 4th season and it has begun with the weekends at near capacity. The weather hasn’t been what one would call perfect camping weather with overnight temps ranging from the low 30’s to the upper 50’s, but then, there are very few tent campers. We are happy to find so many friends and acquaintances in both the Staff personnel and the campers/visitors. It is always good to see them and to see how and what everyone did over the winter.
It is also going to be interesting here in the park because of Project that is going on here. The DNR and the Scott County Conservation Commission are working together to reestablish a clean water lake. Now that doesn’t mean that our lake is dirty or contaminated or anything “BAD”. The lakes are all man made lakes and they are showing signs the natural silt that enters the lake becoming suspended in the water. There is a lot more to it than that but I am no expert at what they are doing.
They need to empty the lakes of their current residence. I know that they have unlimited length and catch limits going on now (you still need an Iowa Fishing License and Trout stamp to catch trout) until July 15th. After that they will start lowering the water so they can move into the next phase which is dredging, shoreline repair and then fish habitat. Eventually the lakes will be restocked and when those fish have grown to legal size the lakes will be open to fishing again.
I will try to post some photos as this project moves forward.
